Hobbies and Interests in your CV: Very important.

In looking at your CV, especially towards the end, an employer’s eyes easily stray to the hobbies section. What do they expect to see? Normally, people will list hobbies that may not attract the attention of the employer. This is a very dangerous approach because it can knock you out of the shortlisted group. Be careful what to write in this section.

Hobbies and interests are among the optional aspects of the how to write a CV (Curriculum Vitae) guide. They could be included or excluded, however in the earlier option i.e. where hobbies and interests are a part of the curriculum vitae, be careful about what to write and what to preferably avoid. This is quite obvious, especially considering the relevance of a curriculum vitae in the process of job search and therefore favorable career progression.

Too much money, too soon can be a bad thing.

By Jackson Biko.
I once stopped over at a convenient store in a petrol station in Westlands to pick breakfast after a night out. It was midnight. Now, this particular petrol station does more than just sell fuel at night; it’s a meeting point of sorts, a place where the young (and some old) come to drink alcohol, listen to music from their cars and, quite often, engage in some light petting. It’s mostly a bourgeois crowd, or those aspiring to this social class. On this particular night, I see this kid (he must have been 23) standing outside “his” car which was parked between other cars.
He was wobbling on his feet like a penguin, fumbling with his fly, trying to retrieve what lived therein and finally when he succeeded, he emitting a gush of urine on the wheels of the car he had stepped out of; a sleek BMW X5. He was taking a bathroom break on the wheels of a BMW X5! That’s almost like taking a leak on a village elder; horrifyingly disrespectful and very perverse.

Interview blunders you should always avoid

In this world everything is about perception and marketers can tell you this very well. I have a brother of my friend who works at KCB as a training manager although he has an MBA in Marketing and he tells me that marketing is about changing or enhancing perception which are focused on influencing the consumption behaviors of our targets. An interview is not different because the perception that you leave behind is very important and thus you should endeavor to market yourself as good as possible.

In this exercise of marketing, it is very easy to find yourself making a few mistakes here and there. The first opportunity you get to create a good impression is the three-second handshake that starts the interview. An ineffective handshake can spoil your image. A limp hand shake can give the impression of disinterest or weakness. Make the handshake short and firm to give out a positive message. We have always advised towards this. Please look at our earlier articles.

By all odds, check the following common blunders:

The do’s and don’ts of following up after a job interview

This is a topic we have discussed before but we won’t to round it up by consolidating three very important things you should or should not do after a job interview. When you get out of an interview, all you expect to hear is a call giving you the vacancy. Are you aware that there are things you may do that can deny you the job. You may be the most qualified candidate but if you do not approach the after-interview steps well, then forget the job.

Following up after an interview can mean the difference between you and the other outstanding candidate.

Here are 3 vital tips for following up after an interview:

Marketing and Distribution Interns Jobs in Kenya

We are looking for a group of dynamic and entrepreneurial interns to join our Sales & Distribution as well as Marketing Departments for the July – September internship period.

You are passionate about books, and eager to explore the ways in which they can both be marketed and distributed to a larger audience, and have an interest in developing new opportunities for readers to explore literature.

You are excited by the opportunity to join a team that is building viable marketing and distribution networks that are commercially sustainable, and by the opportunity to break new ground in accessing readers.

More detailed information on the two opportunities are below.

Marketing Officer Job in Kenya

We produce literature. African Literature. Contemporary African Literature. We have a variety of audiences ranging from the urban, contemporary msanii reader of Kwani? 01 back in in 2003, to the Kwani? 04 one finding answers on a new Kenya and busy acquiring social and economic mobility only to be caught out by the post election violence.

We are now on to Kwani? 06, made up of writers under 30, and in the beginning stages of putting Kwani? 07 together.

Our journey since 2003 has meant interacting with all kinds of writers and readers, young and old(er). You are an entrepreneurial and intellectually curious person who is challenged by ways in which we can communicate with all these diverse groups of people.

Sure you read Ngugi and Achebe in school like all the rest of us, but this was not the last time you read an African writer’s work. You are a self-starter who is highly familiar with social networking sites, and the many ways in which books can be made available to a wider public, including digital and other applications.

Have you ever tested your employability?

You may be blaming different reasons for you not being employed. You can also easily blame your credentials and even doubt them for not getting the right job. But have you ever put yourself in the shoes of an employer? If you were employing or if you were an HR executive, will you employ yourself? Have you gone to so many interviews without any positive response? In the interviews, have you wondered what the panel wants to hear from you? And have you been telling them what you think they want to hear?

Actually on this career centre, I have found out that we always concentrate on telling you what you can do to improve your CV, how to enhance your interview skills and not really what the employer wants to hear. Just to tell you the truth, you may have a glamorous CV but the time that the employer meets you, he may not see that glamour in you or vice versa. A CV may be a good start but may not be everything that you need in job hunting. Actually all the processes we have discussed before that can help you get a job should be perfectly done and if not then you may miss out on an opportunity of a life time.

Food for thought!

Are you blaming your surrounding for your circumstances?

There are people in the world who feel that the universe is against them and there are those the universe belongs to them or is their birthright.

The first group will always blame other people for their misfortunes, they will live to hate others & the environment and they may not care about their surroundings.

The second group will grab everything within their reach. They will want to own all other things in the world and if possible own people. They are greedy and selfish & they cannot stand the sight of other people prospering.

Where are you especially relating to the job searching world?

Interview with a recruiting agency: The job seeker perspective

Have you seen job adverts where the recruiting company in not mentioned? They will always start with the phrase, ‘our client……..’ or any other of their choice. What should you do and at www.careerstom.com we advise you to research about the employer? Many companies run job adverts and omit their identity, sectors they operate in or their addresses in preference of newspaper publishers’ contacts. Some of the adverts in newspapers or websites carry scanty information and request interested candidates to forward their details to a postal address. Others use proxy recruitment agencies that don’t indicate their client’s profile.

While it’s true that an employers are at liberty to do what pleases them — after all they are paying for the advert — they have to consider that there are qualified employees who are not willing to send off their details to the unknown organization.
