There is very little in life more discouraging than spending thousands and thousands of shillings (even if it’s your parents’) on an education only to find no one willing to give you a job and a chance. At a time in your life when the bills start pouring in, your home is in limbo, your relationships and friendships are askew, and your excitement to get your life “started” is at its peak, there really is nothing more crushing. It takes patience, faith, and hard work to press on, maintain your confidence, and relax.

As a graduate who has gone through it all, I can relate to the suffocating, depressing, never-ending job searches that make you question every choice you’ve ever made – especially choosing to go to college in the first place. I know what it’s like to have bills outnumbering and outweighing your meager income. To have to accept an unrelated job where you are treated like shit and you’re not so schooled co-workers are paid the same as you. Or to work in an environment where everyone is miserable and work sucks out your will to go on.

In 1967, when I quit high school at age 17, I knew what my next project would be: founding Student magazine. But I did not know what I wanted to do in the long term. The headmaster’s parting words to me were, ‘Congratulations, Branson, I predict that you will either go to prison or be a millionaire.’ I am not sure whether that could be classed as career advice or not, but it did give me the impetus to prove him wrong on the first point.

When I set up Student magazine, I wanted to work as a journalist; however we needed to keep the magazine afloat financially and soon I had to stop reporting and focus on production and financing instead. I stayed involved in the editorial side by landing some of our most important interviews, but for the most part, during Student’s early days I honed my skills at business, negotiating and management – all of which would later prove useful as we built the Virgin group.

What is a Management Trainee?


From first-line supervisors to top executives, managers plan and direct the work of the organization. They set policy, establish channels of communication and evaluate the work that is done. These functions require knowledge, skills and judgment, which are most effectively developed on the job.

To prepare graduates for management responsibilities, come companies recruit management trainees. These positions are often found in finance, trade, manufacturing and government agencies. Depending on the business, the position may also be referred to as marketing trainee, purchasing trainee, accounting trainee and management intern.

Lessons from the Eagle: Dynamism through tides.


Not too long ago, I shared a platform with a friend on transformational leadership. He recalled the inspirational story that has often been told about the life cycle of an eagle. The eagle can live quite comfortably for up to 40 years. At this age, natural attrition sets in. However the lifespan of an eagle can be extended to 70 years. But it is not that simple. The eagle must undergo a most painful transformational process.

At the age of 40, the eagle is frail and vulnerable. Its talons are weak and useless. They cannot grab prey. Its beak is frail, bent and useless. The feathers are overgrown and heavy. They make it difficult for the bird to soar. The predatory king of the skies must now choose between dying and living.
To live it must retreat to the mountains for 150 days. Here, it will painfully beat its bent beak against a hard place until the thing drops off. The hopeless talons are likewise hit against the same hard place and shed off. Now the bird must wait patiently for a new beak and talons to grow. These, it will use to pluck off its heavy feathers and allow fresh ones to grow. At last the bird is reborn. It is time for it to soar and rule the skies again.
